“The handicap of deafness is not in the ear; it’s in the mind.” Marlee Matlin
Society thinks that deaf people live in a “silent” world – but that is untrue. Sign languages exist all over the world and are used the the deaf to communicate words, thoughts and ideas. They are anything but silent. I am not deaf but I admire people who are deaf.
Their thoughts are still full of images, feelings and words. They don’t feel silence in their heads and they don’t feel silence in their environment. Their environment is visually noisy. Their visual noise includes movements of their children, other people, colour, animals, light and anything that moves.
Sound has never been important to them, but it’s not absent from their world. They are aware of its existence through sound vibrations. If it’s loud enough they will hear it and know where it is coming from. Deaf people just live in a very visual world. There is no sense of emptiness or ‘something missing’.
To all my Angels, life will throw curve balls, obstacles and challenges your way. But be brave, kind and have courage in everything you do.
Trust me, it will be worth it! Always be brave.
