Feel like you are on display

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” Helen Keller

For many people with disabilities, being stared at is an all-too-familiar experience. Whether it’s out of curiosity, confusion or even sympathy, these looks can be uncomfortable and sometimes even painful. I have had to endure the stares’ of people with my limp and right-sided weakness – and I’m still not used to it after all these years.

These stares can make you uncomfortable, they certainly make me feel like I’m on display. I feel self-consciousness and isolated. It’s important to acknowledge that while some people may stare with bad intentions, others stare out of confusion or pity. I hate it when people take pity on me. And I know many of you my Angels feel the same.

For many, seeing someone with a disability might be a strange experience. They might be curious about the person’s condition or even they have a condition of their own and see you as an example and they admire you. You never know what happens behind closed doors my dear Angels.

Remember, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their abilities. In this day and age it might seem obvious, but sometimes I think people forget. Whether its out ignorance or rudeness, its something that a person with a disability must learn to live with. Your disability will make you stand out – just shine at the same time!
